Airplane Shop Space :: FINALLY!

20130928-151141.jpgI was able to secure some shop space at the airport for my airplane projects this morning. It’s not much, but will be enough to clear some space in our garage at home for some upcoming changes. I’ll primarily be using the space for storage this winter, and hopefully moving into my own hangar by Spring or earlier.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be out at the Warrenton Air Park, 7VG0.

The Future of Affordable Flying?

20130926-070741.jpgIs the future of affordable flying already here? I suggest that it might be. In fact, I’m suggesting it has been here for decades, we have just been ignoring it in favor of fancier, faster, and more expensive forms of aviation.

So, what is the future? Ultralights. They’re downright cheap to buy on the used market, cheap to fly, and cheap to maintain. The highest cost is likely going to be the hangar, but that could be solved by being based at a private field that is more ultralight friendly than your typical municipality-run airport. Let’s face it, local governments don’t give a shit about the future of aviation. The local airport is either a revenue generator, or a target for urban development. But I digress.

I submit for your consideration this beautiful Quicksilver MXL. At just under $5000, it’s much less expensive than a new car, and priced below most used cars. It’s a single seater, but most recreational flights are flown solo anyway. If you’ve been throwing money away in your 401k, it’s time to cash it out and use it for living. You only get one shot at this life, you’d better enjoy it while you’re still alive.

QUICKSILVER MXL ULTRALIGHT • $4,999 • PRICE REDUCED • This is a great running and great flying Quicksilver MXL ultralight with Rotax 377 that only has 36 hours on it since rebuild (plane and engine 36HRS). This plane is in good flying condition and will be happy to demonstrate for you. Steerable nose wheel, 3 axis. It has nose pod with air speed, dual cht, and dual egt and a tini tach for rpm. Always hangered! Today’s Barnstormers Find

20130911-070315.jpgIn my never ending search to uncover the best deals in derelict airplanes, I often come across items that catch my eye. The two Taylorcrafts below caught my eye.

Now, I realize that recovering an airplane is a several thousand dollar undertaking. But let’s look past that. Focus on the unique here. What we’ve found is an opportunity to buy a complete, stock Taylorcraft for well south of ten G’s. It needs fabric, so you might as well do a full restoration. Well, if you’re going to restore a Taylorcraft, why not take it to the next level and make it a Clipped Wing Taylorcraft? The Duane Cole conversion drawings are now available for free, and both of these birds could be perfect candidates.
